This recording, made for KUOW in 1976, captures the English language Ring performances (sung in Andrew Porter's translation) that Seattle Opera offered before the days of English captions. At this moment in the "Ride of the Valkyries," the rowdy sisters are amused by the offstage cavortings of their horses:

ORTLINDE: See that the mares are far from the stallions,
until our heroes' hate has been calmed!

HELMWIGE: My horse has paid for the heroes' anger!
[Much laughter among the Valkyries]

Joan Herald (Ortlinde) with Thelma Salvesen (Helmwige); the orchestra of Seattle Opera conducted by Henry Holt.
