Faust, competently sung, was not judged a theatrical success. One reviewer noted that “with the exception of a few vital moments, they [the cast] communicate about as much passion as an efficient dental assistant.” Jeannette Pilou, however, won warm praise for her Marguerite; her alternate, Karol Oakley, offered a compelling characterization with her youthful, unaffected stage demeanor. Erich Parce, a very popular local baritone who went on to a major career at the Met and elsewhere, made a strong first impression as Valentin.
