New General Director Speight Jenkins oversaw the final performance of Seattle Opera’s Ring 1, starring a mix of singers who had been with the production for years (such as Emile Belcourt, Johanna Meier, Ute Vinzing, and Paul Crook) and new voices who would go on to great things (such as Roger Roloff, John Macurdy, and John Del Carlo). Julian Patrick, who had been singing in Seattle for many years, joined the Ring for the first time as Alberich. The Nibelung would become one of Patrick’s signature roles. Ragnar Ulfung, an experienced Mime, was the stage director.

For the summer of 1984, there was only one performance—no English-language cycle that summer. Roger Roloff’s debut was thus still-born, because he took ill after the Rheingold and Thomas Stewart rushed to Seattle to sing the Walküre and Siegfried Wotans.
