1991 Ring

At its third complete incarnation, the Rochaix/Israel Ring was for the first time completely accepted—no booing and no nasty letters to the General Director! A third cycle was added—hitherto we had only ever offered two—and although the performances didn’t quite sell out, audiences from 50 states and 18 foreign countries came to Seattle to hear great work from veterans Roger Roloff, Julian Patrick, Gabor Andrasy, and others. New singers included Thomas Harper, who became a professor at the University of Washington and sang all of Seattle Opera’s Mime’s through 2005; William Johns as Siegfried; and Gudrun Volkert as Brünnhilde. The dragon from 1987 (“Big Bird”) put in a second appearance.
