Verdi’s blood-and-thunder opera about Italian patriotism starred John Relyea as the troubled warrior of the title role (alternating with Mika Kares). Ana Lucrecia García and Susan Neves were the Odabellas; the tenor role of Foresto featured a particularly stentorian Antonello Palombi (with former Young Artist Russell Thomas making his mainstage debut in the alternate cast). Bernard Uzan emphasized gritty details in his twenty-first-century staging, showing us the execution of three prisoners of war onstage before the music started.
