1982: Speight Jenkins Meets Seattle Opera

It was 1982 when a dashing young speaker named Speight Jenkins made his first Seattle Opera appearance. Speight gave lectures before each Ring performance that summer; here’s a page from the program announcing his debut. He so impressed the citizens of Seattle, they asked him to become the company’s General Director. Since then, Speight has spent eleven summers of his life producing Ring operas—by comparison, Richard Wagner only got to produce it once!
