In 2001, the Nisqually earthquake forced a cancellation of a
Tosca performance--and underlined the need for a major renovation of the Seattle Opera House. Carol Vaness as Tosca, Greer Grimsley as Scarpia, and Vinson Cole as Cavaradossi adjusted their schedules and gave the audience a replacement performance.
Here, from Act Two, Scarpia (Grimsley) reveals to Cavaradossi (Cole) that Tosca (Vaness) has cracked under pressure and given away Angelotti's hiding-place; Cavaradossi is raging at her when Sciaronne (Paul Gudas) enters with news of Napoleon's victory. "Vittoria!" exults Cavaradossi, dooming himself, while Tosca tries to quiet him and Scarpia rages. Antonello Allemandi conducts the orchestra of Seattle Opera.
