In 1994 Jane Eaglen made her Seattle Opera debut as a last-minute replacement for the title role in “Norma,” conducted by Edoardo Müller. She got a cold on the airplane flying from London to Seattle, and so didn’t sing the dress rehearsal. Thus, General Director Speight Jenkins was as surprised as the audience, come opening night, to hear the sound of this woman’s remarkable voice. Eaglen has gone on to sing Turandot, Isolde, Leonore, Ariadne, Ortrud, Rosalinde in “Die Fledermaus,” and Senta for the company, as well as Brünnhilde in 2000, 2001, and 2005. She also created the role of Aunt Helen in “Amelia,” and won Seattle Opera’s Artist of the Year Award twice.
