The overture to Verdi’s mid-career masterpiece, “La forza del destino,” is one of the composer’s most beloved pieces of purely orchestral music. A medley of great tunes we’ll hear later in the show, the piece moves from the three deadly hammer-blows of fate, to the dogged theme associated with the heroine Leonora’s attempts to evade her fate, to the lovely melody of the tenor aria and beyond.
