Kate Lindsey made her Seattle Opera debut creating the title role in Daron Hagen’s new opera, “Amelia,” in 2010—a feat that won her Seattle Opera’s Artist of the Year Award. In her Act Two aria this distraught young woman, nine months pregnant, wonders (in the words of Gardner McFall's libretto) “How will I explain to our child what happened? I lost my father like a thimble or a jack. And for what? No war is worth that. From inside the hangar I watched him walk to his plane; he grew smaller and smaller, like a jet that becomes a dot in the sky. I should have held him tighter, begged him to stay...when he died I told myself the worst that could happen had happened, and nothing more would touch me that way.” Gerard Schwarz conducts the Seattle Symphony, with Kate Lindsey as Amelia and Nathan Gunn as Paul.
