Glynn Ross had high hopes when he presented Robert Ward’s The Crucible in Seattle in 1968—the company’s first venture into contemporary opera. But according to Ross’s memoirs, “the Seattle audience was still oriented to the popular repertoire or a popular star with a semi-popular European work.  The idea of an American work, and the idea of the English language in opera, was still to be accomplished.”
