Supertitles, which came to Seattle Opera in 1984, lifted the burden of having to present each Seattle Opera production in two languages. But Speight Jenkins maintained Glynn Ross's tradition of engaging two separate casts (renaming them “Gold” and “Silver”), which allowed him to increase the numbers of performances. All the performances of each opera must happen in a quick two-week period, because of other demands on the opera house. And singers can’t perform major roles two days in a row; voices need a day to rest. Generally, Jenkins has cast major singers in the gold cast and emerging artists in the silver. Many Seattle Opera fans will tell you that it’s well worth it to hear both casts.
