Ravel’s
L’enfant et les sortilèges, marketed by Seattle Opera as “The Enchanted Child,” is a breathtakingly beautiful one-act featuring singing clocks, ripped up shreds of wallpaper, and an arithmetic book that comes to life and chastises a naughty child. YAP Artistic Director Peter Kazaras, with costume designer Daniel Urlie and set designer Yoshie Tanokura, set the show on a subway car: the Child (returning from a private school with a long-suffering little sibling, the Squirrel) acts out and then hears from many of the fellow-passengers. Mezzo Elizabeth Pojanowski and male soprano David Korn alternated as the Child and the Squirrel, and the opera showcased the considerable talents of many other Young Artists.
